Description

China: The Rebirth of an Empire

Peaceful rise or potential threat? What does China's 21st century re-emergence as a great world power mean for the rest of us?

"China: The Rebirth of an Empire" is an investigative documentary produced by brothers Jesse and Jeremy Veverka that explores ten countries and territories in East, Central and South Asia as well as the United States while examining the immediate results and future implications of China’s international ascension.

The film asks if this rising China exhibits any tendencies or warning signs of hegemony or potential empire. The film concludes that China, on its way to becoming a super-power, could possibly evolve into some form of modern empire. However, whether this represents a threat or an opportunity is determined ultimately by our worldview as individuals.

The film features interviews with more than sixty relevant individuals, including politicians, businesspeople, academics, students, activists, tribal-members, refugees and even a Taiwanese rock star. The brothers interviewed Professor Chalmers Johnson, president of the Japan Policy Research Institute and author of bestselling books “Blowback,” “Sorrows of Empire,” and “Nemesis.” Other notable sources include Freddie Lim, the lead signer of Taiwan-based heavy metal band Chthonic; Rebiya Kadeer, president of the Uyghur American Association; Tenzin Choeying of Students for a Free Tibet, Dharamsala, India; and Wei Jingsheng, an exiled Chinese democracy advocate. The film is scheduled for completion in Fall 2009.
